Information Technology or IT for short is the term used to describe the organisation and processing of information via computer or other forms of technological systems.

This includes database management, software engineering, hardware, networking, web technologies and user-centred design, web design to name but a few.

IT is concerned with the presentation of information: how it is arranged, processed, structured and ultimately, assimilated by the user. IT covers a wide ranging spectrum from building hardware systems for schools through to corporate Intranet systems for businesses. It can include the web designing and developing of a sports club website for less than a hundred members through to the implementation of a large scale system for the welfare state, e.g. NHS computer system.

There is an increasing drive to present information digitally, which with the Internet and the World Wide Web has resulted in global access to all sorts of information. Information that has previously been unavailable to many has now become accessible at the click of a mouse.

More and more businesses rely on large scale systems in order to simplify procedures, organise information better and to speed up various processes thereby saving time and money. The nature of work has changed dramatically due to the influence of information technology which in today's competitive world, is a necessity.

As a result of this, society is moving to a 24/7 state as information can be sent around the world, speedily, easily and, at any time. As the demand grows for information then IT will continue to play an important role in this demand.
